Job Description

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

This role sits within a highly established, commercial builder known for delivering complex, high-visibility projects across the East Coast. The organization has more than a century of experience and has earned a reputation for craftsmanship, safety, and repeat client relationships. Employees participate in a robust ownership program where share value has grown dramatically over the past several years. In addition to a competitive salary and 401(k) match, the company’s ESOP serves as a second retirement vehicle—allowing team members to benefit directly from the company’s long-term success. For superintendents based in the D.C. region, this role offers major growth potential. You’ll help scale a rapidly expanding local office while managing impactful projects in healthcare, higher education, federal facilities, and K-12—typically ranging from $10M–$200M. It’s a strong runway to senior leadership for someone who wants to own outcomes on site and build lasting regional influence.

Compensation: $130,000- $160,000 (negotiable) plus bonus

Location: Washington DC area. Candidates must live in the Washington DA area or be willing to relocate immediately. No relocation compensation is available at this time.

About the Role

The Superintendent is the onsite leader responsible for driving all phases of construction from site mobilization through turnover. You’ll own day-to-day field operations, coordinate subcontractors, monitor safety and quality, and keep the schedule and budget on track. This is a hands-on position that requires strong field visibility, clear communication, and the ability to guide crews of varying sizes. You’ll work closely with project managers, clients, and trade partners to ensure the project delivers exactly as promised—safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead onsite construction activities from pre-construction through closeout
  • Oversee subcontractors, trades, and field personnel (typically 3–5 direct reports and up to 100 workers onsite)
  • Enforce all safety, quality, and compliance standards
  • Conduct daily site walks and coordinate logistics, sequencing, and field planning
  • Maintain and report on project schedules, cost impacts, and progress updates
  • Ensure strict adherence to project specifications, drawings, and quality programs
  • Partner with internal teams to resolve issues quickly and keep work moving
  • Foster a collaborative, respectful environment with trades, clients, and partners
  • Ensure all work aligns with established procedures and industry best practices
  • Support weekend or off-hours work when project demands require it

Requirements
  • 8–13 years of field construction experience
  • Proven success overseeing projects valued at $10M+
  • Background in healthcare, higher education, K-12, or federal construction
  • Strong track record managing projects from start to finish
  • Experience leading both direct reports and large field teams

Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field
  • OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 (or willingness to obtain)

Technical Skills
  • Deep understanding of construction safety standards
  • Working knowledge of CPM scheduling and cost reporting
  • Familiarity with quality programs and enforcement
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specs, and technical documentation

Soft Skills
  • Strong, clear communication across all levels
  • Highly organized with strong follow-through
  • Calm, steady presence on the jobsite
  • Comfortable making decisions in fast-moving environments

Location Requirements
  • Lives within 90 minutes of Washington, D.C.
  • Able to work onsite 5 days per week

Traits to Avoid
  • Extremely short job tenures or excessive role-hopping
  • Preference for managing from inside a trailer rather than being present in the field
