Vice President of Engineering (NYC – Onsite)

Location: New York City (5 days/week in office)

Compensation: $350,000–$450,000 base + 1.0–1.5% equity

Visa: Sponsorship available for candidates currently based in the U.S.

About the Opportunity

We’re partnering with a high-growth, venture-backed technology company building a modern operating platform for independent brick-and-mortar retailers. The company integrates point-of-sale, ecommerce, payments, embedded financial tools, and AI-driven workflow automation into a unified system designed to help small businesses increase revenue and reduce operational complexity.

In just two years, the company has achieved strong product-market fit, scaled revenue significantly, maintained exceptional customer retention, and is growing at an aggressive pace month over month. Backed by top-tier investors, the business has substantial runway and ambitious expansion plans over the next 24 months.

This role is effectively an early-stage CTO position. You will inherit and lead a small but high-performing engineering team (currently ~5 engineers, $2–3M budget) and scale the function into a world-class technical organization.

The Role

As VP of Engineering, you will:
  • Own the entire technical organization and engineering strategy
  • Partner directly with the Founder/CEO on product vision and roadmap
  • Architect scalable infrastructure capable of supporting rapid growth and high daily transaction volume
  • Build and integrate AI-driven agents into core customer workflows
  • Lead embedded fintech initiatives (e.g., payments, ACH, instant funding, payroll integrations)
  • Recruit and scale the engineering team from ~5 to 10+ engineers
  • Represent the technical organization in board meetings and investor-facing sessions
  • Engage directly with customers to incorporate feedback into product development

This is a hands-on executive leadership role requiring both strategic thinking and technical depth.

What We’re Looking For

Experience
  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including 2–3+ years in a leadership capacity
  • Prior startup experience (must have operated in high-growth, early-stage environments)
  • Demonstrated success hiring and scaling engineering teams
  • Experience in fintech, payments, or transaction-heavy systems strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to operate at executive level and participate in investor discussions

Technical Background

Strong working knowledge of:
  • Node.js
  • TypeScript
  • Next.js
  • tRPC
  • AWS cloud infrastructure

Experience designing and scaling distributed, cloud-native systems is required.

  • Located in NYC or willing to relocate independently
  • Motivated by building a category-defining company
