A new Design Engineer role has opened due to continued growth with an AI-powered back-office platform serving fast-scaling startups. We’re looking for a design-minded engineer to shape and build intuitive, production-ready user experiences that simplify complex financial and operational workflows. In this role, you’ll partner closely with product leaders, engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders to bring thoughtful, intelligent interfaces to life—helping users navigate high-stakes operational decisions with clarity and confidence. With a recent ~$18M Series A and plans to double headcount, this is a high-impact opportunity to join as the first person in this function and help define the visual and experiential direction of the product. Compensation: $140,000 – $230,000 base salary + 0.15%–0.25% equity




Location: Preferred on-site in NYC (Flatiron). Remote considered for exceptional candidates.

Role Overview

The Design Engineer will own critical user-facing experiences across the platform, transforming complex financial operations into intuitive, polished workflows. This is a hybrid role blending UX, UI, prototyping, and front-end implementation.




Responsibilities
  • Product Experience Design
  • Develop user flows, interface patterns, and end-to-end experiences across web and mobile applications.
  • Own and evolve the product’s design system to support scale and design consistency.
  • Visual & Marketing Design
  • Design landing pages, digital ads, presentation assets, and promotional materials that support conversion and growth initiatives.
  • Maintain consistent visual identity across marketing and product touchpoints.
  • Design System Ownership
  • Build and maintain component libraries, design tokens, visual standards, and documentation.
  • Create processes that streamline collaboration between design, engineering, and product.
  • Rapid Prototyping
  • Use design tools and AI-assisted workflows to create prototypes for user testing and internal validation.
  • Test layout concepts, interaction models, and new features before committing to engineering implementation.
  • Process & Tooling Optimization
  • Improve internal design–engineering handoff methods.
  • Implement automated visual QA workflows and cross-team alignment tools.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work with product, engineering, and go-to-market teams to align business goals with polished user experiences.
  • Translate technical constraints into elegant design solutions.
  • Strategic Product Input
  • Identify opportunities to simplify complex financial workflows and streamline back-office operations for users.
  • Contribute to long-term product direction and roadmap decisions.




What You Bring
  • 1-6 years of experience as an engineer with a knack for design thinking and strong visuals
  • Prior engineering experience ideally at a start-up or digital agency
  • Design experience/portfolio including fintech and payments software companies, highly data-intensive products (telemetry data for IoT, Whoop, etc) or marketplaces
  • Figma and other product design experience
  • Former founder experience preferred, even if it failed
  • A strong career path in engineering, or university degree
  • TypeScript, React, Nextjs, Tailwind, CSS, Figma experience

Eric first learned how to find top-quality candidates and conduct effective interviews while still in school in 2008. In all his jobs since, he used that knowledge to help the company hire. In 2018, Eric became a full-time recruiter, mainly working on roles in the industrial and skilled trades industries. Since then, he has hired candidates from all industry sectors and walks of life.

Eric joined Rainier Recruiting in 2021, working from his home in the beautiful Willamette Valley in Oregon.
